Your Other Half

Everyone has two sides to them.
Being a human being is all about the constant conflict between your natural, animalistic impulses, and the structure and organization demanded by culture and society, aka social norms.

I came up with an interesting analogy that mixes ideas from Psychology (Sigmund Freud) and Political Science (Robert Dahl).

When it comes to the two different sides of a person, they are just about equal in strength, but in terms of influence, not so much. The way you act in the eyes of others is a result of the outcome of the battle between your animalistic side, and your humanistic side. In some cases, the animal has its way, while in other cases, the human has its way.

Though they are an equal 50/50 distribution in terms of impulse and thinking, when one has its way, it demonstrates a 50% +1 majority, kind of like in presidential elections decided by the traditional electoral college. There are two sides battling it out, but in order for something to get done, whether it be electing a president, or manning up and talking to a cute girl, you need a majority, even if it is only by a slim margin.

The majority decision is that which everyone else around you sees, given your choice to display it. Given your decision-making process, those things which you decide to do are the victors in these little internal arguments, in the same way that Barack Obama is the fresh new embodiment of values and people that America represents.

On the other hand, even though one side may have won the battle this time around, the other side's rights to hold its own opinion about a certain situation are still maintained; the rights of the minority are respected and protected. One day they will have their way.

Yes, I know it probably doesn't make any sense, and it's a pretty ridiculous idea. But you can't go wrong with a new perspective, can you?
